In 1997, this property was considered for development into a 50-unit condominium motel. After significant tree removal had already taken place, community members and the Village of Ephraim worked together to preserve this environmentally important area. That commitment continues today. Recent improvement projects have enhanced the visitor experience with trail restoration, new bridges, and educational signage that helps visitors understand the ecological importance of the wetlands. The newly added interpretive exhibits share the story of the people who worked to save this land and explain why protecting wetland habitats matters for future generations. Learn more about the project through the [Village of Ephraim’s official website](https://ephraim.wi.gov/). ![Signboard for Ephraim Wetlands Preserve with headline 'A Wetland Protected!' and circular photos of plants and wildlife.](https://www.edge-waterresort.com/wp-content/uploads/door-county-bird-watching-ephraim-wetlands-scaled.jpg) ## Wildlife Viewing and Bird Watching in Ephraim The Ephraim Wetlands are a wonderful destination for visitors interested in wildlife viewing in Door County. Cherry picking may be sweet, but it’s also sticky, sunny, and full of surprises. Here’s what you’ll want to bring to ensure the best cherry-picking experience: - Sunscreen and a hat. Shade is scarce, and those cherries don’t grow in the shadows. - Comfortable shoes. You’ll be on your feet in the orchard, so think sturdy over stylish. - Buckets or containers. Some orchards provide them, but it never hurts to bring your own. - Wet Wipes or a damp cloth. Because cherry juice has a way of making itself known… all over your hands, arms, face, and clothes. - Water bottle. Stay hydrated, pick longer, haul more cherries. It’s simple cherry math. - Cash or card. For farm goodies that burst with cherry flavor. - A good attitude… and a little patience. Cherries aren’t exactly hiding, but the ripest ones like to make you work for the reward. Pack smart, pick happy, and prepare for a day full of sweet, sticky fun. Remember to relax and enjoy every delicious, sunshine-filled moment in the orchard. It’s sweet, simple, and fun, making it one of our favorite summer things to do. ## Plan Your Cherry Trip Now Don’t let cherry season slip through your fingers; July is the sweetest time to visit our corner of the world. Here are some things you can enjoy during this Spring season: **1. Tasting Rooms:** Wine: Door County is known for its wineries, and spring is a great time to visit them. Many wineries offer tastings, tours, and music, so be sure to check them out. There is a new winery and tasting room making a great splash that opened up last Fall, Anchored Roots Vineyard and Winery. They are located just south of Egg Harbor, so they make a great stop on the way to the Edgewater Resort. They have a very skilled and well trained winemaker and are a husband and wife owned winery making various wine styles so they have something for everyone. Most importantly they are making some excellent dry wines and also making some great cold-vine grape wines as well. Check them out at this [site](https://www.anchoredrootswine.com). Beer & Booze: There are also a number of local craft beer, whiskey and other alcohol tasting rooms in Door County. In Egg Harbor you have a choice of two within one block of each other. One Barrel Brewing Company mantra is: Handmade in small batches with love. It shows through in their excellent variety and high quality beers and ciders. You can get more information for them [HERE](https://www.onebarrelbrewing.com). They also have Pizza Bros housed inside their tasting room and they are baking up the best craft pizzas in Door County! Hiking in Door County takes you through a variety of scenic views — dramatic limestone bluffs, mossy woods, or secret beaches. With five stunning state parks and over 300 miles of shoreline, this peninsula serves up some of the best hiking in Wisconsin — and, dare we say, probably the entire Midwest. Our guide walks you through the best hiking trails in Door County. ## Why Hikers Love Door County The biggest draw of hiking in Door County is the diverse landscapes packed into this relatively small area. Dramatic cliffs overlooking the lake, forests of hardwood and evergreen trees, rock beaches, winding trails…you name it, Door County probably has it. Want to take your best friend with you? The great news is that all trails except those at the Ridges Sanctuary allow dogs. Just keep them leashed and clean up after them. You’ll also need to find [dog friendly hotels in Door County](/dog-friendly), Wisconsin. Door County’s four-season appeal means hiking opportunities abound whether you’re surrounded by [spring blossoms](/blog/2023/03/5-things-to-do-in-door-county-this-spring), [summer](/blog/2025/07/cherry-picking-in-door-county) greenery, autumn foliage, or snow-dusted forests in [winter.](/blog/2025/02/door-county-winter-activities) And since many of the trails are located within protected parks, you can enjoy pristine nature that’s well-maintained and marked. Here are some must-visit hiking destinations to add to your [Door County itinerary](/blog/2025/09/things-to-do-in-door-county): ![view from sven’s bluff scenic overlook point at peninsula state park in door county wisconsin](https://www.edge-waterresort.com/wp-content/uploads/EWR-blog-peninsula-state-park.jpg) ## Peninsula State Park: The Crown Jewel of Door County No list of Door County hikes would be complete without Peninsula State Park, the county’s most popular and expansive park. Covering over 3,700 acres, this park offers several hiking trails that range from easy to moderate difficulty. ### Best Hiking Trails in Peninsula State Park: - Eagle Trail (2-mile loop): This is one of the park’s most famous trails, featuring limestone bluffs that rise 150 feet above Green Bay. It’s a bit rugged with steep sections, but hikers are rewarded with jaw-dropping views and a sense of adventure. - Nicolet Bay Trail (2 miles one way): This is a more relaxed hike, winding through forests and lakeshore areas — perfect for families and casual walkers. Beyond its natural beauty, the park offers sites to learn about the [region’s history](/history). The park has a lighthouse, campgrounds, and plenty of scenic overlooks to complete your day outdoors. This park will always have a special place in our hearts for its variety of [activities](/activities) and proximity to our resort. ## Whitefish Dunes State Park Just south of Cave Point, Whitefish Dunes State Park offers a different kind of hiking experience. As the name suggests, this park features impressive sand dunes alongside forested trails and a beautiful sandy beach. Trails worth exploring include: - Brachiopod Trail (1.5-mile loop): This educational trail includes signs about the area’s geological history and offers access to scenic overlooks. - Red Trail (2.8-mile loop): This longer trail takes you through dense forests and dunes, providing a quiet, peaceful hike. After a hike, many visitors like to relax on the beach, making it a great combination destination for hiking and swimming in warmer months. ![kaykers on rocky coastline of cave point state park in door county wisconsin](https://www.edge-waterresort.com/wp-content/uploads/EWR-blog-cave-point-county-park.jpg) ## Cave Point County Park If you’ve ever seen photos of Door County’s dramatic rocky coastline, chances are they were taken at Cave Point County Park. While the park itself is relatively small, its shoreline trail is one of the most memorable in the area. Picture a Door County hiking trail that takes you through wave-carved limestone cliffs and underwater caves. On windy days, hikers can watch waves crash dramatically against the rocks, sending sprays of water high into the air. Short hiking trails loop around the park, and you can easily connect to the Whitefish Dunes State Park trails for a longer adventure. It’s a must-see spot for photographers, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to feel the raw power of Lake Michigan up close. ## Newport State Park Avid hikers or those seeking solitude should head to Newport State Park, Wisconsin’s only designated wilderness park. Unlike the other more developed parks on our list, Newport offers miles of quiet trails where you might not encounter another soul. Our favorite hikes at this park include: - Europe Bay Trail (7-mile loop): A longer trail that takes you through remote forest, wetlands, and along the stunning shoreline. - Rowleys Bay Trail (2.5-mile loop): A moderate trail with lake views and access to beaches. Bonus: Newport is also a Dark Sky Park, so if you stay until nightfall, you can enjoy some of the best stargazing in the Midwest. ## The Ridges Sanctuary For those interested in ecology and rare plants, The Ridges Sanctuary in Baileys Harbor is fun visit. This nature preserve has easy boardwalk trails winding through ridge-and-swale ecosystems unique to the Great Lakes region. Spring and [summer](/blog/2025/05/summer-outdoor-things-to-do-door-county) bring a riot of wildflowers and orchids and are the recommended seasons to visit. ![collage of boardwalk to lighthouse in sturgeon bay hiker in front of like a sunrise and door county coastline](https://www.edge-waterresort.com/wp-content/uploads/EWR-blog-door-county-collage.jpg) ## Tips for Hiking in Door County - Wear sturdy shoes: Even short hikes can involve rocky or uneven terrain. - Bring water and snacks, especially in summer, when the weather here is hot and humid. - Respect nature: Stay on marked trails to protect the fragile ecosystems. If you bring your dog, clean up after them. - Visit in different seasons: Every season offers a different experience. The fall colors are spectacular, and winter hikes offer stark, breathtaking views. ## Experience Door County Hiking in Door County is more than just a walk in the woods (though you do walk in the woods on some hikes) — it’s an experience that takes you to towering cliffs, ancient forests, quiet beaches, and wildflower meadows. Whether you’re here for a weekend or an extended stay, lacing up your hiking boots is one of the best ways to experience the magic that keeps visitors coming back year after year. Located in the historic district of Ephraim, WI on Eagle Harbor, Edgewater Resort is an unbeatable destination for your next vacation or weekend getaway. Canonical: https://www.edge-waterresort.com/history Alternate (text/markdown): https://www.edge-waterresort.com/history.md **Content:** For the past 125 plus years, the shores of Eagle Harbor in Ephraim have been graced by the Edgewater Resort’s classic architectural lines and distinctive verandas, making it one of Door County’s first and finest most recognized resorts. The original lodge was built in the 1890s as The Edgewater Lodge. The building that is now the Old Post Office Restaurant was built in 1874 for Hansen’s General Store and housed Ephraim’s post office in the early 1900s. The two-block area surrounding the Edgewater Resort is particularly rich in Ephraim History. The Edgewater had a large dock that at one time dropped off guests who stayed at the Edgewater Lodge. There was the main guest lodge and a dining/gathering hall where meals and entertainment were delivered with exceptional hospitality. Some guests would take railroad service from St. Louis and make their way to Ephraim. Most early guests came for a long summer stay Anderson Dock, which now is home of the Hardy Gallery, received guests over 150 years ago from ships loaded with summer visitors to Door County. There remain many buildings from that time, including the Preserve at Andersen Pond, all only minutes from the Edgewater Resort and is a wonderful hiking trail that is dog friendly. There is also the old Ephraim Firehouse built in 1935 built from local limestone and constructed by the local CCC workers and is now the Firehouse Museum for an interesting look back into time. Of course, there is also Wilson’s which has been selling its own ice cream and root beer since 1906 and is still the busiest place right after sunset, where customers have been coming back generation after generation as the place to go. The village was founded in 1853 by the Reverend Andreas Iverson as a Moravian religious community. The steeples of the Ephraim Moravian Church and the Free Evangelical Lutheran Church-Bethania Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation are the landmarks of the village as seen from Eagle Harbor. Ephraim was the last dry midwestern village in the Midwest until 2016. Eight different Indigenous groups made their homes in what is now called Door County. Before Swedes, Norwegians, Moravians and Belgians, there were Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Ojibwe, and Sauk. Door County is famous for its very high caliber artist and musician communities which have been a part of Door County and Ephraim since the beginning as well as many environmentally forward thinkers. The Clearing in Ellison Bay was founded in 1935 by Jens Jensen who by many is considered to be the most important American landscape architect and he declared The Clearing his “great work.” All year round there is a lot of art, history, nature, and music to explore in Door County. The Edgewater Resort was converted to a condominium hotel property in 1999. It continues to operate as a year-round historic hotel resort with more modern-day comforts, while providing sincere and relaxing Door County style hospitality and honoring the storied history of Ephraim and Door County. We invite you to look at our photo gallery where you can view some historical images of our property. The Edgewater Resort has 24 charming, upscale, comfortable, and spacious waterfront 1- and 2-Bedroom and Studio Condo style suites, which you can escape to at any time of the year, including Winter.  Most rooms have: a full-size kitchen with full-size appliances, separate living room with fireplace, in room 2-person whirlpool tub and king bed in the separate bedroom, private beach and dock, spectacular views of Eagle Harbor and our famous sunsets over the water from your veranda or room, all year-round.  We also offer a rustic fire pit, fitness center, sauna and many more amenities to enjoy.
